Yea, they are missing a huge market by assuming that there's no interest, when really the knowledge is lacking. And yea, there are a lot of people still doing minis, webcomics, doodles on their schoolwork,etc, that may not be getting coverage but are still comics. I personally make comics, although they aren't very good :D
I also think the rising stars is a great training ground for the OEL line which I hope will bear fruit with a more diverse american comics culture.
