Fanfiction makes manga characters more like superheroes, with many different versions, time lines and random characters in for the ride. I also enjoy the fact that I can totally ignore these different versions, as they have little to do with canon.

I'll write about some versions of Fruits Basket chracters, with spoilers, of course.

Of course, there's male!Akito and female!Akito. I prefer female!akito because you can write in some nice gender issues there.

My favorite version of Shigure is dark!shigure- a chracter based off manga!shigure in which Shigure's dark side really shines. fun!shigure? I prefer him in fics that are before the current time line of Fruits Basket.
Snagged off LJ I think I just died of a combination of horror and amusement:

Best explanation of Fruits Basket, ever. I like this couple because they *are* both bad people. Akito/Kureno? Nice sometimes, but it wouldn't work because Kureno is actually a decent person.

Old post is old but I have to note that I prefer female!akito. I am not against yaoi, although I don't think the younger Zodiac have it in them. I could see the Madabuchi[sp?] Trio having youthful fun, yes, but Haru, Momoji and Ritsu in a random three man pileup...maybe not so much. Of course, I'm a huge Akito/Shigure/Kureno fan. I think it totally exploits the whole creepy family is creepy factor. I always liked the darker parts of the manga more than the fluffy bits. Also baby!tohru is cute. I'm going to be mature and useful in this blog someday.

I wonder what's up with the Bone feature on the PBS Newshour? There are interviews with Jeff Smith and a librian at the cartoon research library. A very sensible overview. There's also an Insider Forum.

My new desktop background has spoilers for Fruits Basket, but I'm happy enough about it, to show it to the whole intertubes. I'm in a happy Fruits Basket haze. Images copyright of the original author, tokyopop, etc.

Note: There should be a trope to describe the fact that [spoilers!!!!!!] good!akito wears kimonos far less often[so there's less of creepy old family people wear kimonos. creepy kimonos] and seems to get girlier and girlier...

I read a conversation about Fruits Basket spoilers and someone was talking about how a character did not deserve a happy ending. That it was not realistic. I thought that was silly. I mean, does Tohru deserve to have her parents die? Do the Sohmas deserve the curse? In real life, as in stories, there is pain and suffering we don't deserve, as well as joy we don't deserve.

Unearned joy and sorrow are part of life, and so I think it gives a story spice to add it. I don't think Fruits Basket is a wish fulfillment series. I mean, it's cute that the sweet girl is surrounded by hot guys, but the whole curse aspect- even from the beginning it was apparent that there were darker waters there.

Some spoilers for Fruits Basket. I think I like the parts with the dark family secrets and especially Akito/Shigure much better than the parts with Tohru[who is growing some angst and Kyo. The part about Tohru wanting to break the curse for Kyo? good. But Kyo blaming himself for her mom's death? Eh..Kyo's got enough angst already. You have to balance it. Akito is OK for a lot of angst because his/her evil actions need explanation. Kyo? a regular guy with a hot temper and some cousin rivalry issues. You don't need that much angst- just make him the outcast with a dead mom, and it's fine,ok?
