Oh, hardwired desire

Some weirdos who don't know anything about fanfiction think it tells us about hardwired desire, with no data at all to support this. Because I'm sure we're all hardwired to love us some Jack/Ianto necroporn. And you know what? fanfiction is way more than just porn. A lot of us like to explore the dark parts of the canon or the implied secrets thereof. I love het, I love slash, I love femmeslash, but usually I don't want romance, true love or happily ever after. I am not a little girl who is seeking to Mary Sue my way into a story, I like characters I DON'T identify with. I mean, I don't want to be a sociopath that transforms into a dog when hugged by the opposite sex nor do I want to be a teen boy with mechanical arms who lives in a fricking war zone.

Bad science, no!

The source of it all.
I love this response.

I don't care

about Disney buying Marvel. Big conglomerate buys another entertainment company. Big woop. I can't think of anything that I'm thinking 'don't touch it, Disney!' although my worries are quite soothed by the fact that Miyazaki films seem to be released here fine, and remember Pixar? Everything was good in that hood.

Nana 18

I got it today. The bonus story made me feel sympathy for the devil. I love Nana because it's a story of crushed dreams and broken ideals. Nobu and Takumi- I think they could have both had the women they loved if they had had the courage to shatter their own illusions. And of course, the true love story of Nana- Nana and Hachi. They didn't want to shatter each other's illusions about each other, so things fell apart. Hachi wanted Nana to believe that she was a 'good girl', their madonna not their lilith, and Nana wanted Hachi to believe she was strong, not weak and falling apart. This is why every time I get a new volume of Nana, I cry.

Love*Com

Having read volumes 1-3, I think that if the obstacles to Risa and Otani's relationship lasted more than a chapter or two at a time, the story would be more engaging. Haruka, go after your hero! Seiko, what's with this I want my beloved to be happy stuff? Manga author, when you make the obstacles higher, you don't have to come up with a new one every few chapters.

Artist Auction for Health Care

46 million!

Spike talks about Templar, and makes an important point about fantasy worlds. I find that the best fantasy worlds are ones you wouldn't want to live in. The undersides and the dark underbellies often make better stories than bright utopias.

I'm enjoying the 1st volume of Love*Com better than I expected to.

I'm a small minded bigot

because I don't want to play some game I haven't heard of before. Dude, I don't have enough money for most of the media I want. Why should I make space in my small small budget, maybe $30 a month, for media for you if you hate goodness, decency and pie? Anyway, Orson Scott Card used to be good, now he sucks. and that's that on that.

Ponyo Ponyo Little Fishie in the Sea

I saw Ponyo. It was cute. I love retro animation. The soundtrack[except for that last song in the credits] was amazing, and the atmosphere was lush. I wish that we knew more about say...whether Ponyo's dad was human or not. I guess he is, but he lives in the sea. And what is Liza's hate on for weed killer? And why is Ponyo so adorable?
Haaaam!

The dubbing was a little wonky- why leave sensei untranslated? Children might not know that, you know. And Fujimoto's voice...he wasn't really good. The other dub cast were adequate.

References in Ponyo that are SHOCKING: references to paganism, beer, breastfeeding, small boys crying, paleontology, the fabric of reality, and fairy tales.

It's a mystery

Damn, that post is fierce

A huge post about the erasure and misappropriation of POC in film. Source material that is diverse and shows our world in more accuracy and color is whitewashed. Folks wonder why I don't look forward to film adaptations of books or comics I love. This sort of thing is why. All the quirkiness, originality, and even people of color disappear, and it often becomes the same cookie cutter.

This post is a good post...

How the outsider hero marginalizes outsider groups even more. Another problem is that it makes the cultures and peoples around the hero into just background music for the outsider hero star. The oppressed folk had lives and histories and stories to tell way before this guy came here with his inspiring speeches. He is in the spotlight, and they are in the shadow. Boooring! I don't want to hear about some white guy who saves the savages. It's a dead horse trope. Give me something new.
