As you know, ADD folks, I'm obsessed with the GALS! anime. The lady at slighty biased manga doesn't like Ran, but I love her, even though I wonder how she manages not to flunk out of school... The sense of self importance is the sort of thing you'd expect from a teenager. I also especially like the no plot set up of GALS! as it leaves a lot of room for character humor.

Score one for decency! Although I still wonder who in the Action Girl committee thought that such words as bitch and ass were all ages. Well, more action girl for me, although I do have a quibble with issue 12. I think more folks need to see the possibilities in rejecting femininity. Thrifting or making your own while cheaper doesn't increase the level of possibilities open to women appearance wise. We should make it clear to younger girls that they don't have to wear makeup, shave, or do whatever crap is in this year to feel good about themselves.

I like being a second wave activist myself. I'm 22, and think that shitty comic figures are not a victory for women everywhere. Oh yea, and I hate women like this too. Did you know that getting a hobby and having a personality can work for women? Because defining yourself by your makeup isn't getting it.

Action Girl

A long time ago, Evan Dorkin gave my mom's class a large stack of Action Girls. I'm supposed to go through the comics in the questionable pile and see if they have cuss words in them. I like Action Girl so much I've been putting issues in the no pile for merely having the word shit or bitch in them..

I wonder why in modern manga we don't have as many instances of Victorian Novel Disease? In Onii-sama E, we have Kaoru no Kimi's heart disease as willed by the plot and here we have Tsukige's heart disease as well..

The Glass Mask volume 2 is starting off with Maya's kind benefactor being farking nuts. Punching folks in the stomach and burning their old clothes. I'm still enjoying Gals! Episode 16 is pretty good with continuity as Ran is shown wearing the clothes she passed to Maki, the gal in training.

Man, do I love Glass Mask- the style is very old fashioned- it reminds me of Tezuka's style. And it's full of good old manga daring do- in the first chapter our protagonist delivers 120 orders of noodles by herself and jumped into a cold river for a ticket. In chapter 2, she memorized a whole 3 hour play after only watching it once! The scanlators also did a good job with the sound effects.

Sweet! I downloaded the whole Glass Mask manga! *is seeding it in joy* Must read old shoujo!

Super Pimps- because what I really want to see in my comic books, a space where black people are already underrepresented is a glorification of the oppression of women(selling women isn't erased by fighting super monkey or what the fuck ever) and the good ol' stereotypes that we really need some reinforcements to.

Oh yea, and some TCJ guys are dicks about the whole Mary Jane statue thing. Because we don't think manga statues that are creepy are bad. We're just picking on poor poor Marvel with their millions of bucks. Oh yea, and because a porn picture is really proof that something is totally not sexist? Still watching Super Gals! The second DVD is pretty good- the show is hitting its stride- tons of character based humor with Second Place, Ran and Machida Black.

I'm watching Super Gals! and getting into it! I'm on the second DVD and I really enjoy the cheesy feel of the show. It's like Archie- a cheery sanitized view of teen life with some nice lessons for our elementary school kids such as don't become an escort or don't join a gang(note that in the rough streets of Shibuya, the worst that happens is that a pipe fight breaks out). I've always been enjoying Manabi Straight- it's one of those sci fi stories I actually like. I don't care about your giant phallic space blaster or how hot alien/robot/whatever chicks are- I want to know what people think will be going on in the future. The social ramifications of a low birth rate for high school students? Sounds good!

I read Beauty Pop v. 1 and it really cut off on a cliffhanger! Man, do I feel pissed that I left my wallet at home, and didn't get Beauty Pop v 2 for less than $5! I'm jonesing now. I didn't know the Beauty Pop author did Ask Dr Rin, I guess I should download more of that. But man, I'm so excited for the next one! I really am behind on manga I guess.

Spoilers for Hot Gimmick: Gah! She picked the abusive asshole! Also, the last chapter sucked and was really rushed. I liked the little short story with Akane and Subaru. Much better couple! I read Teaching Through Trauma and Don't Be a Crotte last night too, and I liked the story about what really happens if you date an abusive jerk- it's not all luuuuv!
