A Fake Geek Girl

In reponse to this. I admit I do think there are some fake geek girls. Not anime fans that have only seen Bleach or comics fans who have only read Scott Pilgrim. Those people need a recs list. And you don't need to know every single issue of Batman, either. But I don't like it when just regular ol' models and actors think they need to attract a bigger fanbase by pretending to be geeks. At least the folks who don't know the classics at least LIKE what they say they are geeky about. Maybe in a few years, they'll become deeper geeks. What they won't do is lick a video game console just to get their 15 minutes of fame.

You may say, but aren't you being super mean to the pretties?! No. It's one thing to sew your own awesome outfit, even if your boobs are falling out. It's another to be "What demographic am I today? I guess I'm a geek now. I was a hipster yesterday." Geekiness is PASSION. So show some.

Kudos 2

Yet another game that would be a whole lot better if you could change the race of your character. At least you can mod the game. I should learn how to do game mods, and I wonder if there's a community of modders to make games more diverse, more interesting, and more fun.

Uh...no...

Everyone can not move halfway across the world. It's a matter of money, psychological fitness, and a whole bunch of other factors. I think we all take some things for granted. I can write English sentences that resemble something that might be grammatically correct, but many people can not do that. I find the thing people most take for granted is social ability. The ability to go to a strange place, make friends, and fit into the mainstream of life is something many don't have, even if there's no actual cultural barriers. This has little to do with this guy's long rant on how he loves how Japanese people love Dragon Quest, but it's something important we always miss. Not everyone is the same, and what is easy for some is impossible for others.

The idea that everyone can do everything is a huge burden to me. I want to throw that burden down, but I always take it back up again. Wouldn't it be nice to fulfill those dreams that belong to someone else? That person who hates sleep, charms others, and somehow has amazing language skills exists. But, that person is not me, and I am not that person.

I thought I was hardcore!

Sadly, at today's con, I learned I was about as hardcore as something not hardcore. I learnt that us Memphis gamers are all wimps, as in Maryland, children start playing Settlers at age 5, and by age 12, are playing Axis and Allies. My idea of an intense gaming session is 3 3 hour games, so my wussiness is noted.

Also, the cosplayers were hard core. From people wearing bikinis in 20 degree weather to period correct fairies with a spray of greenery for wings, the hardcoreness impressed me.

Delicious Vanilla

A man[or a woman] doesn't understand delicious vanilla.

In other news, dear people in the library, don't tear out the pages of the Megatokyo comic books. I was enjoying that! I was flashing back to my charming college days! I was certainly not expecting you to tear out 5 whole pages! So don't do that kids!

Game Fail!

From gamers of color, we find this stupid game. The creators thereof seem to believe that depicting people of color as savage cannibals is a great idea. I love board games, but it seems that people of color are either erased or put off to the side. And people complain that board gaming isn't as popular as they want it to be. Knock off the eurocentrism and kick these asshats out and we'll be all good.

Set Phasers on Awesome! w/ Spoilers

I watched the Star Trek movie and it was great. I thought I had forgotten all of my Star Trek knowledge, but then I was like, everyone knows that Captain Kirk was the only person to pass the Koboyashi Maru[sp?] and thinking 'hey, why aren't those red shirts wearing red shirts', so I guess I must have retained almost all of the information I had.

I tried to remember that the physical rules of the Star Trek universe are different from ours. Because really...I'm not sure things would explode that pretty in space, and really, how did they avoid being sucked into those black holes? Also, I think that movie!Spock, movie!Kirk and movie!Uhuru in any combination is my OT3, even though I must ponder what's with my love of OTXs and what's with all the het pairings. I know everyone's like engage thrusters on K/S, but...

I was glad that it wasn't overly violent. When I'm playing a game, I'll be like 'eh, this game is too happy. Dead corpses hanging upside down? Eh, where's the fountains of blood and coffins everywhere?" But when seeing a movie in a theater, I really don't feel comfortable. Maybe it's because I think small children should see less violence nowadays, and many parents think *every* movie is appropriate for kids.

Of course, the whole time travel business made me think 'are they going to incorporate a time loop?' But then again...I may have played too much Final Fantasy- both 1 and 8 had time loops as plot devices.

Also, some of those girls in the background had some nice fros.

Also, the whole 'you're a child of two worlds, Spock' thing annoyed me because I don't like the undertone that mixed race[although here it's mixed species] people are necessarily caught between two worlds. Some biracial people identify with more one than the other, some identify with something totally different. And even monoracial people are children of many worlds.
